The VHS holds 3 meetings and a number of other events each year.
Wednesday 8th June 2016
Prahran RSL – 301 High Street – Prahran
7.15pm – 10.30pm
Greg Fyfe and John McGrath
We are VERY excited about this evening as it will present two very entertaining speakers and topics.
Firstly Greg Fyfe will give us an overview of the Alice Springs Desert Park and an in depth look at the reptile collection and how it has changed over the years.
John McGrath will then follow on with Creatures from the Crypt.
Cryptozoology 101.
Stand by to be introduced to an ensemble cast of creatures that would not seem out of place in a B-grade horror movie. What does it mean to be ‘vertebrate of the year’? Could freshwater cephalopods actually exist? What about the worm that ate sheep; a dugong bigger than a bus; a ‘Lazarus taxon’ two metres long thought to be extinct for millions of years; and a snake that resembles a chocolate bar?
What exactly separates fact from fiction? Why was ‘Whiskers’ the most destructive single organism in history? What caused Winston Churchill to become obsessed with platypus at the height of the Second World War? And just how does Brooke Shields fit into the picture?
Tonight, your tour guide, John McGrath, will attempt to navigate the intriguing world of cryptozoology….
John regales us of his many tales of early Australian Herpetology.
So to ensure you don’t miss out on this interesting evening, mark it in your diaries now, for WEDNESDAY 8th JUNE from 7.15pm to 10.30pm at the Prahran RSL, 301 High Street, Prahran. Don’t forget all the usual auction and pizza activities.
