Monitor as we know it, was started way back in 1980 as a way of getting information out to Reptile keepers at the time. Books weren't widely available like they are today, so as you can imagine it was a useful tool for the time for keepers.

Prior to 1980 Brian Barnett and his helpers plotted away on their type writers to put out Monitor in a newsletter fashion, there were 22 editions done this way from mid 1977 until the first publication of the Journal in September 1981.

Over the years Monitor has had many writers contribute, making it world renowned, and also making it one of the oldest reptile Journals in the world.

The magazine has seen writers such as Robert Valentic, Brian Bush, Gavin Bedford, John Cann, Peter Mirtschin, David Williams, David and Tracey Barker, Will Leary, Mark O'shea, Ray Hoser, Neil Sonnemann, and of course Brian Barnett just to name a few of the 100's of names that have made this magazine successful, and its these people and the many others new and old that will help to keep this Journal going strong.

On behalf of the V.H.S Committee new and old, I thank all who have contributed to Monitor over the years, your thanks and support has very much been appreciated. I hope that this relationship can stay strong and together the V.H.S and you the public can help keep Monitor the Journal people have come to know and respect from all things herp related.
